Descriptif

The Milton Parc Citizens' Committee does mobilisation, education, and incubation of projects in issues such as housing justice, homelessness, citizen democracy, food autonomy, ecology, and the solidarity economy. We started during the 60s as a movement to save the neighbourhood and were able to create a kind of community land trust with 16 housing cooperatives and 6 housing non profits, for a population of 1200 people (the biggest concentration of housing coops in North America at the time). Currently, we are involved in projects including neighbourhood citizen assemblies, a community centre with coworking offices and an alternative library, collective gardens, a food bank, a cooperative bar-restaurant BMP, a youth worker coop, the SLAM tenants' union, and various initiatives in indigenous homelessness like Samedis Solidaires which does food distribution, the Indigenous Support Worker Project which does peer-led street patrols, and Comm-Un which has created an indigenous art coop. We also continue to mobilise for community uses of urban space including the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital, the Royal Vic Hospital (including in solidarity with the Mohawk Mothers), an abandoned school, empty lots, and several churches.
