Alabaster Jar Foundation For Teenage Moms

Lagos State faces a growing crisis of teenage pregnancy and sexual/gender-based violence (SGBV), with systemic gaps in information access, healthcare, and legal protection for survivors. Key data highlights: 

High SGBV Prevalence:   A 2023 NOIPolls report found that 1 in 4 Nigerian girls experience sexual violence before age 18, with Lagos among the high-burden states.     - The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) reported 5,624 SGBV cases in 2023 alone, with **teenage girls constituting 31% of survivors (DSVA Annual Report, 2023).  
Teenage Pregnancy & Abandonment: UNICEF (2022) estimates that 22.5% of girls aged 15–19 in Lagos are already mothers or pregnant, often due to coercion or ***.   Many are rejected by families, as cultural stigma forces them into homelessness (The Guardian, 2025: Zara and Faith’s Story).  
Critical Gaps in Support  
 Lack of SGBV Information: A 2022 study by WARIF revealed that 68% of Lagos teens do not know how/where to report abuse.  
Shelter Shortages: The Lagos State Ministry of Youth & Social Development acknowledges only 3 functional shelters for SGBV survivors, none dedicated to pregnant teens (Daily Trust, 2024).  
Postpartum Abandonment: As reported by he Carter Center (2023), most shelters (including ours) can only house survivors temporarily, leaving them vulnerable post-delivery.
