Barawe Initiative Organization (BIO) is a locally rooted Somali non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Barawe District, Lower Shabelle Region, Southwest State in Somalia. BIO is committed to improving the lives of vulnerable and severely underserved communities through integrated humanitarian, rehabilitation and sustainable-development programmes.

BIO responds to immediate humanitarian needs while addressing the underlying social, economic and institutional challenges that affect community wellbeing and resilience. Its work is organized across eight interconnected sectors:

1. Education

BIO expands access to inclusive and quality education through school support, literacy activities, learning materials, mentoring, community-based education, life-skills development and youth leadership initiatives. It also promotes vocational orientation and practical skills that prepare young people to participate productively in their communities and local economies.

  • SDG 4: Quality Education
  • SDG 5: Gender Equality
  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

2. Health

BIO strengthens community health through disease-prevention education, public-health awareness, maternal and child health education, hygiene promotion and practical community outreach. Its health interventions seek to improve knowledge, encourage healthier behaviour and increase the wellbeing of vulnerable households, particularly women, children and displaced communities.

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
  • SDG 5: Gender Equality
  • SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

3. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

BIO improves access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene by supporting safe-water initiatives, sanitation promotion, hygiene-awareness campaigns and community education on disease prevention. • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
  • SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
  • SDG 13: Climate Action

4. Protection

BIO promotes the dignity, safety, rights and social inclusion of vulnerable individuals and families, particularly women, children, internally displaced persons, young people and other at-risk groups. Contributing to:

  • SDG 5: Gender Equality
  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
  • SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

5. Humanitarian Emergency Response

  • SDG 2: Zero Hunger
