We will all be sharing our views on our society as black artists. Here are the artistic proposals from everyone in the group, the general theme being Freedom of Expressiom:
SACHA: Through a series of spoken-word poems based on my lived experience, I will explore how freedom of expression is often complicated by racial and gendered expectations, particularly for those of us who navigate the world through layered and intersecting identities that shape how we're seen and treated. I will also be talking about the sexualization and fetishization of Black women in the Western imagination, and the frequent dismissal of *** identities of femme or female-bodied people by straight men in sexually charged encounters.
KAYA: I will be reciting a few poems with the themes of: praise, confusion, passion, viscerality,
resentment, injustice, fervour, death and complacency- to mirror our current society and the
historical moment we inhabit. There is an innate dichotomy within the themes of my poetry as
my words can make some uncomfortable. Though I also have poems that have soothed people in
a comforting way. I am not one to constrain myself with any labels, but being gay, black, and a
woman, gives me a specific insight and facilitates the amalgamation of themes portrayed in my work.
KEVIN: I will be presenting a few pieces that explore very personal and personable themes. The poems we’re about to explore are intimate reflections on the human condition—each one a window into the tensions between authenticity and armour, vulnerability and guardedness. I introduce the themes of internal conflict and the struggle to reconcile one's true self with the facades we maintain, highlighting how these pieces use vivid, everyday imagery to depict the burdens and bittersweet moments of existence. I also emphasize that these poems invite us to reflect on our own experiences with waiting for change, the cost of inaction, and the quest for genuine connection in a complex world. My goal is to engage the audience in not just a literary experience, but a shared exploration of what it means to live authentically amidst life’s contradictions.
